  • Dear Friends,

In this issue, we would like to highlight some of the Iraq Foundation's (IF) recent activities. During December, IF has worked hard to promote its mission throughout Iraq. The Iraq Foundation is pleased to announce that they have been awarded a substantial grant from the Workers of St. Alban's Board of St. Alban's Episcopal Church to help Yazidi orphans in Sinjar, Iraq. In addition to this humanitarian project, with the funds raised from last March's charity fundraiser, IF staff throughout Iraq have delivered much needed humanitarian supplies to other organizations and homes that support orphans as well as mentally and physically disabled children. During this period, IF staff in Basra also held a workshop in Sulaimaniya for social workers in southern Iraq on techniques to resolve family disputes peacefully and prevent violence against women. Our Pledge for Iraq (PFI) staff arranged and met with several key figures in Iraqi politics. In addition, IF's Human Rights Defenders Network (HRDN) released its 10th electronic newsletter, which reports on human rights conditions in Iraq.

As always, should you have any questions about our activities, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Sincerely,

    Joseph Sandor

IF Receives 3,000 Dollar Grant to Help Orphaned Yazidi Children

In December, IF was awarded a 3,000 Dollar grand from the Workers of St. Alban's Episcopal Church to Help Yazidi Children, orphaned in a mass terrorist attack. On August 14, 2007, the town of Sinjar, situated near the northern Iraqi town of Mosul, was subjected to a coordinated suicide attack. At least four suicide bombers driving fuel tankers packed with explosives raced into the residential areas to maximize the death toll. To date, this attack is considered one of the deadliest in Iraq, killing an estimated 500 ethnic Yazidi, wounding hundreds more, and leaving hundreds of Yazidi orphans in dire need. The conditions for these orphans are grim and little aid or support has reached the sufferers of this great tragedy. Working with the Yazidi Brotherhood and Fraternity League, IF will work to address this pressing situation, and provide these orphans with essentials, such as food, clothing, educational supplies, and toys.

    Fundraiser Update:
IF Donates to Orphanages and Homes for Mentally and Physically Disabled Children throughout Iraq

Despite the tenuous security situation in Iraq, IF staff distributed essential supplies to various orphanages and charities throughout Iraq, which care for orphans and mentally handicapped and physically disabled children. Last March, IF held its second charity fundraising event to support our growing humanitarian mission. Thanks to the generosity and support of many individuals and organizations, the Foundation raised 16,000 dollars. With these funds, IF has sourced and delivered thousands of dollars worth of essential items and supplies to a number of charity organizations in Iraq. While last year's distribution focused mainly on Baghdad, this year IF is distributing aid to many more governorates in Iraq.

To date, IF has delivered to several homes in and around Basra, the Future Association for Children of Iraq in Diyala, as well as the Bait Al-Toufil, Saint Hanna orphanages, and the Children Rehabilitation and Education Association in Baghdad.

IF's Pledge for Iraq Team Meets with Iraqi Political Leaders

The Iraq Foundation's Pledge for Iraq (PFI) team arranged and participated in meetings with several prominent figures in Iraqi politics to promote the PFI campaign in December, in addition to our media and parliamentarian monitoring activities. The Pledge for Iraq, established in March, 2006, proposes a platform of five laws to guarantee freedom of expression, the integrity of the judiciary, and protection of human rights. The goal of this campaign is to institutionalize this agenda across a broad social and political spectrum. IF's PFI staff arranged and participated in a meeting for PFI's Chairwoman, Dr. Azhar Al-Shaikhly, and board member Ms. Jacquelyn Zumaya with Sayyed Ammar Al-Hakim, Deputy Director of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), on December 3, 2007. Sayyad Al-Hakim was receptive to PFI's platform and understood its goals. Later in the month, on December 29th, IF staff met with Dr. Hunain Al-Kadu, Deputy Director of the Human Rights Committee in the Iraqi Parliament, to discuss the Freedom of Peaceful Demonstration Law and the Freedom of Expression Law. Dr. AL-Kadu informed IF's PFI team that these two laws have been merged into the Freedom of Expression and Peaceful Demonstration Law, which has now been submitted to Parliament for its second reading.

IF Trains Iraqi Social Workers on Conflict Resolution Methods for Women and Families

During the last week of December, IF hosted a workshop in Sulaimaniya to train social workers from the southern Iraqi governorate of Basra on conflict resolution methods and techniques, which address family abuse and conflict with a particular focus on women and children. This workshop is part of a project sponsored by a grant from UNIFEM, which aims to help prevent domestic violence and abuse in Basra and to train 10 social workers on methods to resolve domestic disputes based on personal status laws. With these new techniques, these social workers are projected to help 250 families over a four month periodby either resolving family disputes non-violently or helping protect women and children from harm in separations.

IF's Human Rights Defenders Network Publishes 10th Newsletter

The Human Rights Defenders Network (HRDN) published its tenth newsletter in December. These newsletters report on the human rights situation in at least 12 different governorates of Iraq each month. Formed in December 2006 by the Iraq Foundation, HRDN monitors, documents, and advocates for human rights in Iraq's governorates. Published in Arabic, HRDN's monthly newsletters are available on our website. Some newsletters are also available in English. To learn more about the HRDN project click here.
