The Iraq Foundation (IF) successfully accomplished the 2nd training cycle and held graduation ceremonies to honor the widows’ achievements in both Baghdad-based training centers in early October. The third training cycle followed the graduation ceremonies in Baghdad as well as in the Ba’ashiqa, Mosul center and continued in the four other training locations in Basra, Maysan and Chabaysh.

During October, IF arranged a number of successful meeting to promote women’s rights and an understanding of the widows plight in Iraq with key stakeholders, including: Ms. Basima Abdul Ameer Al Sa’ady, Baghdad Provincial Council Member, who visited the Rusafa training center. Ms. Al Sa’ady updated the widows on the last legislations and laws that will bring benefits for them in specific. She informed the widows that the ministry of women has adopted a microloans project for women and the ministry of agriculture adopted a similar project for women in rural areas. Ms. Al Sa’ady also informed the widows of a proposal  submitted to the ministry of Labor and Social Affairs which would provide loans to the widows and unemployed women to start a business.

IF staff in Basra arranged a meeting with three widows and Ms. Shannon D. Quinn, Democracy Coordinator from the US Embassy in Baghdad. IF described the achievements and the challenges of EIWT as well as the progress and achievement of the EIWT participants as a result of the training.

With IF’s assistance, five widows in Basra were awarded grants to start their own small businesses during October by an international organization. The grants helped three participates to purchase hairdressing equipment to start a hair salon and run the salon from their homes as well as allowed two widows to buy sewing equipment and other necessary equipment and materials to run a small sewing shop from their homes.

The Iraq Foundation (IF) successfully accomplished the 2nd training cycle and held graduation ceremonies to honor the widows’ achievements in Maysan and Chabaysh, Dhi Qar. These ceremonies received high attention from the local government councils, selected figures from the Council of Representative (CoR), tribal and civil leaders and were well covered by the local and national media.

We are pleased to report that, IF participated in “Supporting and Defending the Rights of Widows in Iraq” conference, hosted by Relief International and under the auspices of the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

IF began the project’s 3rd   training cycle in 4 centers, which includes two centers in Basra province (Shat Al Arab and Al Madina), one center in Maysan province and one center in Dhi Qar province (Chibayish). The 3rd cycle started on 4 centers between the 2nd week and 3rd week of September, contracts & MOUs been signed with Trainers, MOH, partner NGOs and local centers. Surveys been distributed and filled by the widows in each center and been sent to the expert for evaluation.

IF completed the recruitment of the widows and prepare all requirements for the 3rd cycle two centers in Baghdad (Karkh & Rusafa) and one center Ba’ashiqa. All  3 centers will start implementing the activities of the 3rd cycle during the month of October.

IF is pleased to report that another three widows participating in the EIWT project from the Maysan province were recently awarded grants from an international organization to start small businesses! Here’s some photos and information about the businesses the awardees started:

  •  The first awarded widow, who supports a family of five, was able to get a grant to open her small Market store out of her house to sell clothes and house appliances.
  •  The second awarded widow, who supports a family of four, was able to get a grant and she is selling house appliances
  •  The third awarded widow, who also supports a family of four, was able to get a grant and she is working on food manufacturing.

IF completed the educational and vocational training throughout Iraq as part of the Empowering Iraqi Widows to Thrive (EWIT) project’s 2nd training cycle throughout Iraq during the month of August. Due to Ramadan, the graduation will be held in September for all widows.

In addition , IF reached out to the CoR- Committee for Labor and Social Affairs and arranged a meeting with MP Yonadme Kanna, allowing EIWT participants to meet the elected official, advocate their rights, and potition for job opportunities.

IF staff also conducted  continued to meet with the staff from international organizations to generate income opportunities through mini-grant programs, microloans and other job opportunities.

IF met with the Minister of Women (MOW), Ibtihal Kasid Al Zaidy, and MP Jenan Bresam as well as local provincial council members and women’s associations. In Basra, staff brought widows to meet with members of the US Embassy, DRL and US chancer and other officials.

While visiting the center in Ba’ashiq, Mosul, IF also met with members of a local Provincial Reconstruction Team and UN representative to discuss micro loan opportunities for EIWT participates.

IF’s partner in Maysan, the Women’s NGO, was able to provide the widows in Maysan with 20 sewing machine to allow them to start their own businesses out of their houses.

In addition to implementing life changing training and empowering our widowed participants with vocational opportunities, IF arranged for widows to meet with the elected officials in order to better advocate for their rights. To help facilitate employment opportunities, IF met with the Minister of Women (MOW), Ibtihal Kasid Al Zaidy, and MP Jenan Bresam as well as local provincial council members and women’s associations. In Basra, staff brought widows to meet with members of the US Embassy, DRL and US chancer and other officials.

IF staff also conducted site visits to Mosul and Maysan enters to oversee and monitor the implementation of the project as well as meet with the cycle’s widows and discuss their progress. While visiting the center in Ba’ashiq, Mosul, IF also met with members of a local Provincial Reconstruction Team and UN representative to discuss micro loan opportunities for EIWT participates.

Through the Health and Hygiene training which IF provided, local doctors and health officials learned that a viral infection had developed in the community thanks to information provided by IF’s participants.

IF  facilitate a site visit to the area with the MOH team and they were able to provide the people there with the required medicine to fight the viral infection and curb the spread of these diseases.
