The AMAR International Charitable
Organization
The AMAR International Charitable Foundation
was set up to provide emergency aid
for refugees in southern Iran and the
Iraqi marshlands
in response to the acute humanitarian
crisis after the 1991 Gulf War. Baroness
Emma Nicholson of Winterbourne (MEP)
is Chairman of the AMAR International
Charitable Foundation. The AMAR Appeal
continues to provide for the refugee
camps in Iran and is working
in southern Iraq to improve the health,
education, and living conditions of
the internally displaced and returning
refugees. AMAR Appeal
now operates eight health clinics in
the Iraqi marshlands.
United
States Agency for International Development
USAID led the first post-war scientific
expedition to the marshlands in June
2003 and conducted a second expanded
expedition in February
2004. To date, approximately four million
U.S. dollars have been committed to
its program to assist the Marsh Dwellers
and the Iraqi
Marshlands, through its contractor, Development
Alternatives International (DAI). The
program seeks to improve the economic
and social welfare of marsh dwellers
through integration of economic, social,
and environmental
issues.
International
Organization for Migration (IOM)
IOM,
under the umbrella of the United Nations,
is coordinating the efforts
of non-governmental organizations and
others in registering
internally-displaced persons, managing
refugee camps, distributing non-food
items, and eventually helping people
to return to their
homes in the south and centre of the country. World
Heath Organization in Iraq (WHO)
The focus of the World
Health Organization in Iraq is on a program
to jump-start the health system. This
involves numerous elements,
including training programs, disease
surveillance, medicine distribution,
and finding solutions to security problems
at hospitals, warehouses
and other health facilities. WHO has
been working with officials and doctors
in the health authority to revive the
surveillance system
in individual cities, governorates and
ultimately across the country.
