News and Announcements

IF Board Member, Azzam Alwash, Named Top Thinker

IF is pleased to announce that board member, Azzam Alwash, has been named as one of Foreign Policy’s top 100 thinkers for 2013! Read more here. The theme of this year’s list was “the decision makers” highlighting those individuals that have “shown the courage to lay their reputations on the line, the cunning to seize opportunities, or the wisdom to recognize that the worst enemy of the political establishment is often inertia.”

IF Contributes to Inter-Agency Report

The Iraq Foundation celebrates the publication of the “Inter-Agency Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Mapping in Iraq.” IF contributed to the development of this report as a member of the SGBV Sub-Working Group in Baghdad. The report provides a snapshot of SGBV patterns, prevention and response mechanisms in Iraq and is meant to serve as a practical tool to pull information on SGBV prevention and response in order to more effectively plan, implement and strategize.

IF Honors Staff Members

The Iraq Foundation would like to honor the hard work and dedication of the following staff members for their efforts on the successful work of the Women for Equitable Legislation (WEL) Project: Ms. Suhaila Al-Assadi, Ms. Amna Al-Katib and Mr. Humam Rajab (pictured below). Due to their efforts, the legislative amendments and interventions that the WEL project has been working on to improve women’s rights in Iraq have been approved by the Ministry of State for Women’s Affairs and have been submitted to the Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, where they await consideration by the Cabinet. Through the persevering efforts of our WEL staff the legislative amendments have also been endorsed by members or parliament, in several cases exceeding the required number in the constitution, and have been submitted to the Office of the Speaker for consideration by the Council of Representatives.

We would also like to thank the members of the Iraqi COR and the senior Ministerial officials who have supported the goals and the work of the WEL project. We also wish to thank our group of dedicated partner NGOs, numerous judges, academics, and activists who have contributed to the success of the project and to bringing it to the attention of decision-makers.

Our sincere thanks to our staff and to all our partners and collaborators!

Ms. Suhaila Al-Assadi, Senior Projects Manager, IF – Baghdad Office

Ms. Amna Al-Katib, Project Assistant, WEL Project, IF – Baghdad Office

Mr. Humam Rajab, Project Officer, IF – DC Office

Support the Tigris River Flotilla

The Iraq Foundation supports Nature Iraq’s campaign to protect the Tigris River through supporting the Tigris River Flotilla.

The Iraq Upper Tigris Waterkeeper and Nature Iraq are planning an epic journey down the Tigris River from southeast Turkey to the Gulf in both traditional Iraqi and modern boats. The goal is to promote the clean-up and protection of the river.

Consider supporting the project. The Nature Iraq Foundation, a U.S.-organizations set up to support conservation work in the region, set up a way for people to do this on the Indiegogo fundraising website. They are trying to raise 20,000 USD for the Flotilla but have less than 115 days to do it. Every contribution, no matter how small will help us reach that goal. If you can help, follow this link to the Tigris River Flotilla or consider putting the following link on your facebook/website:
