Pavarotti Luciano Pavarotti was joined by numerous popular stars to give a concert in aid of Iraqi civilians on Tuesday night.

The 67-year-old opera star was joined by Andrea Bocelli, Eric Clapton and members of the pop group Queen for the charity concert in the Italian city of Modena.

Bono, lead singer of the Irish band U2, performed a duet arrangement of Ave Maria, with Pavarotti singing in Latin and Bono singing in English.

Liza Minelli delighted the 20,000-strong crowd by singing a few bars of Life is a Cabaret from the hit musical Cabaret via live TV link. She is currently in hospital with a full leg cast after breaking her right kneecap in a fall in Bologna at the weekend.

The performance marked the ten-year anniversary of the Pavarotti and Friends Annual Charity Show. Proceeds from the concert will go towards helping Iraqi refugees return to their homes in war-torn Iraq.

Previous Pavarotti and Friends concerts have raised millions for causes including the children of Bosnia, a music centre in Mostar and other projects in Liberia, Guatemala, Cambodia, Tibet, Afghanistan and Angola.

Pavarotti recently announced that he would be retiring from the world of opera in 2005, planning to marry his partner and spend time with his young daughter.
