ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, June 5 (UPI) -- President Bush on Thursday flew over Iraq, including a pass over Baghdad where clear weather afforded those aboard Air Force One, guarded by a pair of F-18 fighters off each wing, a view of the Iraqi capital.

Bush was en route from Qatar to Washington, the last leg of a weeklong trip that saw the president travel to Poland, Russia, France, Egypt and Jordan before a final stop to meet with U.S. troops in Qatar.

A White House spokesman, speaking from Air Force One, said the president was flown over Baghdad at an altitude of 31,000 feet. Air Force One pilots tipped the craft's wings as it passed over Baghdad, allowing those aboard to see the city. From the window, Bush would have been able to make out the Tigris River, Baghdad International Airport, streets, bridges and parks, the spokesman said.

Bush sat on a bench on the left side of the aircraft, pointing out landmarks to Secretary of State Colin Powell, national security adviser Condoleezza Rica and Chief of Staff Andrew Card.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Bush noted several locations in Baghdad, including the site of the "decapitation" attack that began the war on Iraq, two airports and Saddam City.

Asked if Bush would make an unscheduled stop in the Iraqi capital, Fleischer said, "We're going home."

"It's not the purpose of this trip," he said.

The spokesman said Air Force One was over Iraq for 66 minutes

Bush ordered a massive military intervention against Baghdad to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Several sites in the city -- mostly leadership palaces and government buildings -- were bombed or hit with missiles during the battle. U.S. forces continue to occupy the city and have faced sporadic resistance.

U.S. military forces carried out a "decapitation" attack March 20 with a barrage of missiles on a site when Iraqi leaders, including Saddam, were believed to be. Saddam reportedly escaped that attack but has not been seen since U.S. forces entered Baghdad ion early April.

Bush's trip began with a stop in Poland before he headed to celebrations in St. Petersburg, Russia, to mark the 300th anniversary of the establishment of that city. He then attended the G8 summit in the French Alps, leaving that gathering a day early to meet with Arab leaders in Egypt.

On Wednesday he was in Jordan to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas to push the "road map" for peace in the Middle East. The last stop was a talk with U.S. service personnel in Qatar.
