Iraq Captures Former Hussein Bodyguard,
4 Other Terror Suspects

March 14, 2005

By Bloomberg.com:

Security forces in Iraq captured five terrorism suspects, including a former bodyguard of ousted dictator Saddam Hussein and a former brother-in-law of Hussein's son, Qusay, the Iraqi government said in e-mailed statements.

Marwan Taher Abdulrasheed, the former bodyguard, and Abdulla Maher Abdulrasheed, Qusay Hussein's brother-in-law, were caught with two of the other suspects Feb. 8 near Tikrit, the former dictator's hometown, the government said today. It wasn't clear whether Iraqi forces or U.S-led troops made the arrests.

More than 10,000 detainees, including terrorism suspects and common criminals, are held in four U.S.-controlled prisons in Iraq. Security forces have so far failed to catch the country's most-wanted terrorism suspect, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian who has taken responsibility for bombings and beheadings across Iraq.

The fifth suspect, Mohamed Daboush, was caught Jan. 16 in an undisclosed location, the government said in a separate statement. Daboush led a terrorist cell that used car bombs and gunfire to attack security forces, the government said.

Hussein's former bodyguard is suspected of involvement in ``a number'' of attacks against Iraq's security forces, the government said, without elaborating. Abdulla Maher Abdulrasheed is suspected of using funds from Qusay Hussein to finance terrorism in Iraq, according to the statement. Qusay was killed in July 2003 along with another of Saddam Hussein's sons, Uday, in a shootout with the U.S. military in Mosul, northern Iraq.
