Saddam’s
bodyguard, relative arrested in Iraq
March 15, 2005
- By aljazeera.com:
The Iraqi government announced late Monday that the police arrested
Saddam Hussein's former bodyguard and one the relatives of the toppled
Iraqi leader in a raid north of Baghdad last month.
Marwan Taher Abdulrasheed, Saddam’s ex-bodyguard, and Abdullah
Maher Abdulrasheed, the brother-in-law of Saddam's son Qusai, were
arrested in a joint Iraqi-U.S. raid in Feb. 8, on one of Saddam's
former houses outside the Iraqi city of Tikrit, Iraqi Maj. Jamal
Hussein of the military's Joint Coordination Center said .
"On February 8, 2005, security forces, based on information
from local Iraqis, captured the terrorists Abdullah Maher Abdulrasheed,
Marwan Taher Abdulrasheed, and two others" in Tikrit, the government
statement said.
The statement, moreover, accused Abdullah Maher Abdulrasheed of
financially supporting militant operations, using money he received
from Qusay Hussein, whom the U.S. forces killed along with his brother
Oday in July 2003.
"Abdullah Maher was the brother-in-law of Saddam Hussein's
son Qusay. It is strongly believed that he used large amounts of
money that he received from Qusay and Saddam to finance terrorism
in Iraq", the statement said.
"In addition, Marwan Taher was once a bodyguard for Saddam
Hussein and has been involved in a number of attacks against the
security forces," it added.
However, the two are not on any of the American most-wanted lists.
Last month, Saddam Hussein’s half brother, Sabawi Ibrahim
al-Hassan, was captured.
Al-Hassan is accused of financially supporting attacks against
the U.S.-led occupation forces in Iraq.
