Dear Friends,
Throughout the month of December, IF has continued to provide quality programs, trainings, and support to the diverse Iraqi communities we work with. We are pleased to announce the launch of a media campaign to curb corruption in Iraq. The anti corruption campaign is now being broadcast on prime time television and the TV spots are also hosted on our Youtube Channel.
IF also hosted a training workshop in Beirut, which brought together a coalition of dedicated civic leaders, to monitor government performance and access accountability and transparency in terms of freedom of the press, parliament performance and political parties as part of our Post Election Democracy Project (PEDP). In addition, we are proud to report that one of IF's PEDP women parliamentarians, Bushra Hussein Saleh, was offered a State Ministry in Iraq's newly formed government! We Applaud Ms. Saleh for her success and commitment to continue participating in the PEDP project.
IF has made great progress in setting up training centers throughout Iraq, finalizing the training program materials, and identifying qualified teachers and mentors in preparation for our Empowering Iraqi Widows to Thrive (EIWT) project! |
As always, please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions about our projects or activities!
Sincerely,

IF Sponsors 2nd Training Workshop for Civic Leaders in Beirut
IF successfully completed the 2nd civic leaders workshop in Beirut from December 4-6 as part of the Post Election Democracy Project (PEDP). The workshop was implemented in collaboration with Freedom House (FH) and discussed the democracy monitoring draft reports that the civic leaders are working on.
The workshop included working groups during which participants commented on their own draft reports on monitoring Iraqi media, parliament, and political parties' performance and transparency. FH incorporated these comments as well as their own comments on the reports and sent a consolidated version to the participants so that they can revise the first draft accordingly.

Iraqi Women Parliamentarian (IWP) Success Stories
IF is pleased to report that Bushra Hussein Saleh, one of our participating IWPs from IF's Post Election Democracy Project (PEDP), was offered a state ministry on December 22, 2010! Ms. Saleh is the only women parliamentarian appointed to serve in Iraq's newly formed cabinet. Ms. Saleh declared that she owes her success to her party (Fadila party) and to the capacity building she received from the Iraq Foundation.
Ms. Saleh expressed her desire to remain in the program and continue participating in the PEDP project as an active member of the IWPs program. Also during December, IWPs actively participated in a petition aimed at increasing the participation of Iraqi women in the political process. 106 signatures were collected to demand that women be given the posts of vice-president and deputy prime minister as well as 25% of the ministries. The petition also requested that Iraqi women be given the merit they deserve on the basis of partnership and women's proportion in the Iraqi society.
