Dear Friends,
In this issue, we would like to highlight
some of the Iraq Foundation's (IF) recent
accomplishments and activities. Working hard
to promote IF's mission, Executive Director
Rend Al-Rahim traveled extensively in Iraq and
the Middle East throughout the month of May.
We are happy
to have her back in our Washington office
after nearly seven productive weeks abroad!
We are pleased to announce the
successful launch of two new and exciting
projects! The Human
Rights Advocacy Initiative Project (HRAI)
aims to empower Iraqi human rights leaders in
civil society as well as in government
ministries, parliament and in the media. IF
also launched the Women's
Empowerment Project (WEP) in May to train
disadvantaged Iraqi widows in Baghdad and
Basra on a set of skills that will empower
them politically, and increase their economic
independence. Both of these projects will be
conducted over the course of two years.
Also, in recognition of our achievement in
the Anti-Corruption
and Transparency Project (ACT), IF was
awarded a grant extension of six month in May.
In addition to these exiting projects, IF
would like to announce the successful
publication and distribution of the
award-winning essays
from the Human Rights Education competition,
which was held last December in conjunction
with the University of Baghdad (BU). The
winning essays were compiled into a booklet
and published in Arabic and English. To
celebrate this publication a ceremony was
held at BU for
the contest winners as well as various
government officials, including the head of
the Women, Family and Children's Committee in
Parliament, Ms. Samira Al-Musawi. Other
representatives from civil society, academia,
and the media were also in attendance.
As always, should you have any questions
about our activities, please do not hesitate
to contact us.
Sincerely,
Joseph Sandor
Communication Officer

Human Rights Advocacy Initiative
The goal of the Iraq Human Rights Advocacy
Initiative is to empower Iraqi human rights
leaders-in civil society as well as in
government ministries, parliament and in the
media-to be better advocates for human
rights. The Iraq Foundation proposes a basket
of mutually enhancing and
reinforcing initiatives designed to
consolidate Iraq's
budding human rights community into a strong,
broad-based advocacy coalition pressing to
hold the Iraqi government accountable for the
state of Iraqis' civil and political
liberties.

Human Rights Education Competition Essays Distributed |
 |
As part of the Human Rights Education
Project, the Iraq Foundation sponsored an
essay completion last December in order to
stimulate Iraqi academic thought on human
rights. This competition took place in
collaboration with the University of Baghdad (BU)
and was open to all BU students. Out of many
entries from a number of participants, BU
faculty selected four essays from four
students. IF compiled
these winning essays into a book. This book,
entitled 'Human Rights Competition Papers
2007,' was distributed to various
government ministries, civil society
organizations, academic institutions, and
other interested stakeholders in Iraq and the
US in May.
