January 2011 Activities, Issue 53

Dear Friends,

Special Announcement:

It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the death of the Iraq Foundation's Chairman of the Board, Basil Mahdi Al-Rahim.  Mr. Al-Rahim passed in a tragic accident on Friday, February 4, 2011.  His loss has affected us all deeply. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.  Mr. Al-Rahim was a founding member of the Iraq Foundation.  We will miss his guidance, leadership, and inspiration, as we continue to work to realize his vision of a free, prosperous and democratic Iraq.
As we morn this great loss, it is important to all of us at IF to continue to provide you with updates about all of projects and activities.  During the month of January, IF has many successes to report.  We are very pleased to announce the launch of an exciting new project to promote cooperation among Iraq's diverse communities of faith via an innovative and interactive method!  The Interfaith Cooperation Project (ICP) will sponsor the creation of documentaries about key religious sites.  These amateur documentaries will be produced by diverse groups of Iraqi students and shown throughout the country to highlight and openly discuss Iraq's tradition of tolerance and historical importance to many religious communities.

As part of our efforts to empower Iraq's disadvantaged widow communities, we launched training in five provinces, which will provide life changing skills development to 280 widows during the first training cycle!  In addition, IF sponsored a highly productive networking meeting for Iraqi Women Parliamentarians in Baghdad during January as part of our Post Election Democracy Project (PEDP).  Working to promote transparency in local government, IF's Provincial Accountability and Governance Project (PAG) continued broadcasting monthly radio programs and meeting with provincial officials and civil society watchdog groups.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions about our projects or activities!

Sincerely,

Joseph Sandor

IF Launches New Project to Promote Interfaith Cooperation throughout Iraq!
logo 150 x 150It gives us great pleasure to announce that IF was recently awarded a grant to launch an exciting new project that will promote interfaith cooperation in Iraq!

Over the course of the next 15 months, the Foundation's Interfaith Cooperation Project (ICP) will expand religious freedom for all Iraqi faith communities and promote mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. To achieve this, IF will launch an Iraq-wide documentary film competition to capture and celebrate the diversity of Iraq's historic religious sites and its plurality of faith traditions.  The competition is geared towards Iraqi university students of diverse backgrounds.  IF will select the best amateur documentaries, which are filmed, researched, and narrated by interfaith groups of university youth from all provinces of Iraq about the country's religiously diverse and historical places of worship.  Through screenings, broadcasts on Television, and other events, IF and the student groups will educate  the broader public about the historic and contemporary human experience of faith communities belonging to these heritage sites.
