Dear Friends,

March was an extremely busy and productive month for us at the Iraq Foundation and we are pleased to inform you of some exciting activities as well as opportunities for Iraqi youth throughout the country!

We are now accepting applications from groups of Iraqi youth to produce video documentaries that highlight Iraq's diverse religious heritage as part of our newly launched Interfaith Cooperation Project. This is an excellent opportunity for young Iraqis; apply today!  

In addition to this exciting opportunity, IF is pleased to announce the launch of the second year of  "Youth Civics Camp" in partnership with the American University of Iraq in Suleimaniyya (AUI/S)!  Interested Iraqi youths between 18 - 25 are encouraged to apply for this enriching summer program.

 Part of IF's Post Election Democracy Project (PEDP) 4 Small Grants for youth were awarded and implemented this month.  Each year, IF announces 2 rounds of funding for small grants project geared towards Iraqi Youth.  Learn more about this funding opportunity and apply for IF's second round of funding.  The application deadline for submission is May 26, 2011.  For more information, and to apply, please visit our website!  

IF held a networking and capacity building meeting for Iraqi Women Parliamentarians (IWPs) during March. We are pleased to report that the IWP program is growing in popularity, attracting new parliamentarians with each meeting!  IF continued to provide life skills and educational trainings throughout Iraq as well as vocational skills training to 200 widows throughout Iraq!. IF continued broadcasting radio programs as well as TV spots aimed at promoting transparency and good governance throughout Iraq's provinces as part of the Provincial Accountability and Governance Project (PAG).  In addition, PAG's Integrity Monitoring Groups conducted numerous meetings in support of the projects goals, including 15 meetings with Provincial Council Members this month.

IF Launches Documentary Film Competition for Iraqi Youth to Promote Interfaith Cooperation! 

logo 150 x 150IF is now accepting applications for youth groups to participate in the newly awarded Interfaith Cooperation Project (ICP) documentary film contest!  Interested youths groups between the ages of 18 - 25 from throughout Iraq are encouraged to submit proposals for documentary video proposals about the country's religiously diverse and historical places of worship.  IF will select 15 winning teams based on the quality of the proposals submitted by mixed religious and ethnic youth groups comprised of 4 - 5 members.  Winning teams will have the chance to produce their documentaries, screen them throughout Iraq, and the top five entries will be edited and broadcast on Iraqi television!

IF Accepting Applications for 2011 Youth Civics Camp - Apply today!

IF is launching its second year of "Youth Civics Camp" in partnership with the American University of Iraq in Suleimaniyya (AUI/S)!

IF is preparing for Youth Civics Camp 2011. IF will select 100 Iraqi students from across Iraq's 18 provinces to participate in the camps scheduled to run during the month of July 2011.

NEW APPLICATION DEADLINE June 1, 2011

During the Youth Civics Camp, students will train on the 'Democracy Web' curriculum newly developed by the Albert Shanker Institute and Freedom House for use at the high school and undergraduate levels. Special modules in the curriculum will dealt with the Iraqi constitution, the Iraqi state, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens under the constitution.

IF Sponsors Coalition Building Meetings for Iraqi Women Parliamentarians!  

IF held the 4th Peer Networking Meeting for Iraqi Women Parliamentarians (IWPs) in the Iraqi Parliament on March 15, 2011. The IWPs program is drawing more and more attention and we are very pleased to announce that in addition to the project participants three non-IWPs members attended the networking meeting. The March 15th meeting was attended by 17 IWPs and took place at the Iraqi Parliament Constitutional Hall from 9:00-11:30 am. The theme of the meeting was: "Bill drafting". Topics covered included: The roles and responsibilities of different institutions during the process of bill drafting; parliament's role in bill drafting including different committees' roles as well as difficulties and challenges; the process of repealing laws according to the Constitution and the national tasks; the contradiction between the proposal and draft law between the Constitution and the Parliament bylaws and Supreme Court's decision about who is entitled to make laws.

IF Continues Widows Training Program throughout Iraq! 

IF continued providing life changing training to Iraqi widows throughout the month of March.  IF's Empowering Iraqi Widows to Thrive (EIWT) project is currently providing educational training in life skills, health care, and civic education in seven training centers located throughout Iraq. In addition, the project also provides vocational training in each of the seven training centers located in Baghdad, Basra, Maysan, Dhi Qar, and Mosul for select widows.  Vocational training courses in the following topics are being offered during the first training cycle: computer skills, hairdressing, childcare, first aid, food manufacturing, and traditional sewing based on the local need in the community and the widows' aspirations.

IF Helps Iraqi Youth Implement Small Projects to Promote Peaceful Coexistence

It gives us great pleasure to announce that Iraqi youth  implemented four successful projects to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence throughout the country during the month of March as part of IF's Post Election Democracy Project (PEDP).  Each year, IF announces 2 rounds of funding for small grants project geared towards Iraqi Youth.  Learn more about this funding opportunity and apply for IF's second round of funding.  The application deadline for submission is May 26, 2011.  Apply now.  

Projects included workshops on interfaith cooperation targeting students in Baghdad, plays that discudssed sectarian divisions and their consequences that are being shown in Baghdad, Dhi-Qar, and Basra, Plays targeting very young school children promoting peace, love, and acceptance in primary schools throughout Baghdad, and the broadcasting of radio programs led by youth to discuss the values of democracy in the Babil province.

IF Promotes Transparency and Good Governance throughout Iraq  

As part of our efforts to promote a more transparent and accountable government in Iraq, IF's Integrity Monitoring Groups continued to hold radio call-in programs throughout Iraq's provinces  to update the public on the Agendas for Change and provide provincial officials with the opportunity to discuss the measures they are implementing to curb corruption.For a detailed schedule of the programs, please follow the link below.
