November & December 2012 Activities, Issue 75 / 76

IF is excited to share its November and December 2012 successes and accomplishments in its latest issue. 
 
As part of its Widows Initiative for Economic Sustainability (WIES) project, IF held meetings with its NGO partners, selected economic experts in each province, distributed posters and brochures, and interviewed female heads of households. IF Executive Director Ms. Rend al Rehim met with the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, and IF's partner Ms. Ibtisam Al Shamry was awarded a certificate of appreciation by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler. 

Under its Peaceful Empowerment, Advocacy and Cooperation to End violence (PEACE) project, IF conducted interviews with women affected by political and gender-based violence, also to be included in its final report.  

 
IF is very excited to share the successes of youth participants in the Post Election Democracy Project (PEDP). In November and December, IF broadcasted the 2 best student youth-produced short videos on Al-Fayhaa TV and held several art exhibitions. 
 

Women's Equitable Legislation's (WEL) taskforce provided its recommendations on laws that discriminate against women to legal experts and judges, and collaborated with a political advisor from the Council of Representatives. Ms. Rend Al-Rahim headed the Advocacy Coalition meeting to present WEL's achievements. 


Finally, IF secured major opportunities for widows under the Encouraging Iraqi Widows to Thrive (EWIT) project. Free employment services were offered and job opportunities were provided for the widows! Successful mentoring sessions were also held in cooperation with IF's partners.

IF Holds Meetings, Distributes Information and Interviews Women for WIES!
 
In November, IF held a meeting in Baghdad with NGO partners to discuss the project work plan and identify outreach strategies. IF and partner NGOs in five provinces also selected the economic experts in each province. 

In December, IF and partner NGOs distributed 1750 posters and 2000 brochures in five provinces and interviewed 250 females head of household (FHH)! 

Also this month, Ms. Rend Al Rahim, met with Mr. Nassar Al Rubaie, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, to discuss training opportunities for project beneficiaries.

IF's partner, Ms. Ibtisam Al Shamry, was awarded a certificate of appreciation by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, for her hard work and dedication on the expert committee and in the selection of members of the High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq. 

 

 
IF Conducts Interviews with Women and Holds Training as part of PEACE!

 

 

 

In December, IF's NGO partners conducted  interviews in 5 provinces with women affected by political and gender-based violence. These interviewed aimed to highlight the hardship that has been inflicted on these women and their families and understand their needs. Interviews will be included in a final report to be drafted by IF.

 

IF held a case management training for Partner NGOs on December 5 in Baghdad. One representative from each NGO attended to learn techniques on how to conduct an interview with women affected by violence and how to manage their case files.  

 


PEDP Holds Woman Parliamentarian Meeting, Art Exhibitions and Broadcasts Youth Videos!


This month, PEDP continues to successfully assist Iraqi women parliamentarians, and implement youth small grants activities. 

 

On November 11 2012, IF held the Incoming Women Parliamentarians' (IWPs) 10th Peer Networking Meeting (PNM) in Baghdad with the participation of 19 Women MPs. On November 8, IF organized a meeting between British MP Ms. Meg Munn and several Iraqi Women MPs in Baghdad.

 

The Women Mediation in Iraqi Society Project was concluded in November 2012. The project aimed at promoting conflict resolution and giving women a bigger role in peace promotion. Also in November, art exhibitions were held part of the Al-Rafidain Colors Art Exhibition Project at the Al-Mustansirya University, and Baghdad University. In December, IF exhibited 18 portraits at The Institute of Fine Arts for Girls in Baghdad, and 4 portraits in the Second Feminist Art Festival. 

 

On November 28 and 29, IF broadcasted the 2 best student youth-produced short videos on Al-Fayhaa TV: Al-Khaima (the Tent) by Mr. Ali Al-Ka'bi, and Awdat Watan (The Return of the Homeland) by Mr. Ahmed Imad, Mr. Tariq Sadiq, and Ms. Ban Sadiq. 

IF Holds Critical Meetings for WEL Project!

  

 

On November 17, IF held a meeting for the bill drafting process attended by legal experts, judges and professors. Attendees reviewed WEL taskforce recommendations on laws that discriminate against women and assisted in the interpretation process of these recommendations into effective bills! IF also collaborated in November with a political adviser from the Council of Representatives to discuss laws identified by the WEL taskforce! 

 

On December 13, IF's Executive Director, Ms. Rend Al-Rahim, headed the Advocacy Coalition meeting attended by 18 NGOs and civic leaders! Ms. Al-Rahim presented the achievements of the WEL project to date and suggested reforms. IF and partner NGOs developed a number of tools to strengthen the WEL advocacy campaign including issuing a newspaper on activities and working within local communities!

IF Provides EIWT Widows with Job Opportunities, Marketing Meetings and Mentoring Sessions!

 

 

 

In November, IF secured major opportunities for EIWT widows! Staff met the head of a local employment agency and after briefing her on the project, she agreed to offer the agency's services free of charge! IF also found two job opportunities for EIWT widows to work as administrative assistants in Maysan. Finally, IF connected widows in Baghdad, Basra and Maysan with our marketing expert. These meetings will help widows build their businesses with increased knowledge of market conditions and customer needs. 

 

In December, IF held mentoring sessions between successful businesswomen and EIWT widows! These sessions were held in cooperation with our local partner, Women for Supporting Women Association.
