News from the Iraq Foundation

October 2011 Activities, Issue  62

Dear Friends,

IF is delighted to announce that our media partner for the Interfaith Cooperation Project (ICP), Alsumaria television, agreed to compile all 15 documentaries created by youth teams into one documentary about Iraq's religious heritage and broadcast this film on Alsumaria TV!   We are very thrilled and wanted to share the great news with you! Throughout October, the youth teams have held numerous screenings of their documentary films throughout Iraq's provinces.

IF is also pleased to announce that the graduation ceremony has been held in Baghdad for widows who completed the second training cycle as part of the Empowering Iraqi Widows to Thrive Project (EIWT).  The third training cycle is now underway in all seven training centers throughout the country.  We would like to share the success of five participants from the Basra province, who were recently awarded small grants to start their own home businesses with the skills learned through this project.  IF congratulates these women on their hard work and wishes them great success!

During October, IF also conducted the ninth civic leaders meeting in Baghdad as part of the Post Election Democracy Project (PEDP). During the meeting, participants discussed the methodology for drafting the second Democratization in Iraq report scheduled to be published in March 2012 and for which Freedom House is providing ongoing mentoring.

In addition, IF continued to produce and broadcast television and radio talk show programs throughout Iraq as part of the Provincial Accountability and Governance project (PAG) and held meetings with members of local provincial councils throughout the country.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions about our projects or activities!

Sincerely,

Rend Al-Rahim

IF Holds Documentary Film Screenings throughout Iraq

logo 150 x 150ICP teams started screening their documentaries in the Iraqi provinces. Screenings took place in the Baghdad, Diyala, Salaheddine, Babil, Kirkuk, Erbil, Dohuk, Ninewa, Thi Qar, Basra, Maysan, Diwaniyya, and Muthanna governorates. Each team held three screenings of the documentaries in their respective provinces. The screenings aimed at showing that Iraq's minorities are indigenous to Iraq and many of them are descendants of those who lived in ancient Assyria and had a continuous presence in the country ever since. After the film screening, the filmmaking team talked about their experiences researching and documenting the sites and how they related to each other and what it meant to them to work together. Mixed panels of religious leaders and educators lead a discussion after the screenings on the implications of the documentary for the community and the value of public understanding of interfaith heritage. The audience was drawn mostly from the local communities and included Parliament members, former ministers, civic leaders, media representatives, movie experts, academics, and students. Q & A sessions included interesting discussions about the provinces' interfaith traditions and religious heritage and encouraging words about the value and the benefits of this creative initiative.
