Dear Friends,

IF is thrilled to share many the wonderful successes and accomplishments of October 2012!
This month, IF launched two new projects, WIES and PEACE! As part of the Widows Initiative for Economic Sustainability (WIES), IF started collaborating with NGO partners and launching initial activities. Project activities for Peaceful Empowerment, Advocacy and Cooperation to End violence (PEACE) will be detailed in next month's newsletter. The screening was held at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and included remarks by Assistant Secretary Michael Posner and His Excellency Samir Sumaidaie!

IF also connected widows participating in the Empowering Iraqi Widows to Thrive (EIWT) project with the tools and knowledge to market their skills and products and met with local service providers to obtain loans, grants and job opportunities for widows!

IF Launches TWO *NEW* Projects, WIES and PEACE!

IF is excited to launch two new projects, Widows Initiative for Economic Sustainability (WIES) and  Peaceful Empowerment, Advocacy and Cooperation to End violence (PEACE).

PEACE aims to promote peace and end violence through supporting a women-led advocacy and action coalition. PEACE project activities were launched in November and will be detailed in next month's newsletter.

WIES aims to economically empower over 500 female heads of household (FHH) in Iraq by building skills, promoting entrepreneurship, and connecting them with employment opportunities. The project will be implemented in five provinces.

This month, as part of WIES, IF identified and signed agreements with 4 NGO partners in Baghdad, Maysan, Diyala and Ninawa. IF and partner NGOs started the selection of economic development experts, who will assess job skills in demand in particular sectors for semi-literate and literate women. This mapping will assist IF and its partner NGOs to identify  potential employers, job descriptions, and skills that respond best to the recurrent needs of the local market.

Also this month as part of WIES, IF's staff in Basra and the partner NGOs started to contact training centers to deliver the project's training component. Also, contacts with microloan providers have already started. We are currently looking at training centers and have identified FHH to participate in the program.

IF Holds ICP Screening in DC!

On October 9, 2012, IF hosted a screening of the film, "Interfaith Dialogue in Mesopotamia," at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC.

The screening aimed to capture Iraq's thriving belief cultures and foster understanding among a U.S.-based audience of Iraq's long history as a country where religious diversity has flourished. To achieve this goal, the event showcased a 40-minute film, produced in cooperation with AlSumaria, based on documentaries produced by ICP youth. Copies of the film were distributed to attendees as well as information on IF, the ICP project, and biographies of speakers.

Speakers included: Dr. Leila Austin, Co-Director, Global Politics and Religion Initiative, SAIS; Rend Al-Rahim, Executive Director, The  Iraq Foundation; Michael Posner, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor; and His Excellency Ambassador Samir Sumaidaie, former ambassador of Iraq to the US.
