Spring: April - June Activities, Issue 78

IF is excited to share its our successes and accomplishments covering activities from April - June 2013. 
 

As part of our Widows Initiative for Economic Sustainability (WIES) project, IF staff members and partner NGOs representatives delivered a number of trainings to semi-literate women in five provinces!

 

In June, IF held a Second Regional Meeting for Women Parliamentarians from Iraq and the region! Eight countries were represented and participants discussed how to take advantage of new opportunities for women leaders in the changing region! This meeting is part of the Incoming Women Parliamentarians Program (IWPs) - (PEDP Project).

 

As part of the Peaceful Empowerment, Advocacy and Cooperation to End violence (PEACE), IF formed local coalitions in five provinces! Coalitions are working to end violence against women and bring about greater inclusion of women in reconciliation efforts!

 

IF conducted the Advocacy Campaign as part of Women for Equitable Legislation (WEL). Through the Campaign, IF produced eight informative public radio spots nationwide that covered proposed legislation. IF distributed brochures advocating for legal reforms to protect women's rights.

 

Finally, as part of our Empowering Female Candidates (EFC) project, IF completed all cascade trainings successfully in five provinces training a total of 337 women candidates! 16 women trained won provincial council seats!

IF provides literacy training for WIES project!
  


As part of our Widows Initiative for Economic Sustainability (WIES) project, IF staff members and partner NGOs representatives provided a number of trainings to women! IF and partners conducted work-oriented Arabic literacy trainings for 225 WIES semiliterate women and job skills trainings for 60 semiliterate women! 90 literate beneficiaries  joined the job skills trainings. 

 

IF delivered business skills trainings to help women launch businesses to 120 women in 5 provinces! IF is also pleased to announce that 2 of WIES beneficiaries received a grant each from the Danish Refugees Council (DRC) and 3 of WIES beneficiaries were placed at new jobs!

 

IF used information collected by an economic development expert to hold job skills and business skills trainings! The WIES team was able to identify 36 job opportunities in different governorates and 3 women participants accepted job offers at a woman's apparel shop, medical clinic and a nursery. 

 

 
IF Holds Second Regional Meeting for Women Parliamentarians!


  

In June, IF and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (WWICS) successfully held the second Regional Meeting for Women Parliamentarians from Iraq and the Region. The title of the conference was "Women Leaders in an Era of Change." Conference participants represented eight countries: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and the United States.

 

Participants discussed ways to improve their capacity as Members of Parliament in a changing region and provided examples of how women can take advantage of political change. Participants established 31 recommendations to assist women Parliamentarians to most effectively leverage the potential of the Arab Awakening.  

 

 
IF Forms Coalitions, Holds Legal Interviews as part of PEACE Project!
 

During this period, as part of the Peaceful Empowerment, Advocacy and Cooperation to End violence (PEACE), IF formed one local coalition in five provinces inclusive of a diverse cross section of local society. Coalitions have worked on adopting statements calling for the inclusion of women in reconciliation efforts. Meetings have focused on the application of laws responsive to gender, strengthening the role of judicial bodies and developing recommendations for the Iraqi government.

  

IF and partners NGOs in all five provinces have held legal clinical interviews with women victims of GBV, reaching a total of 538 women! 309 victimized women have benefited from the legal support!

IF conducted the Advocacy Campaign as part of Women for Equitable Legislation (WEL) which included a media campaign. Through the Campaign, IF produced eight informative public radio spots nationwide that covered WEL's proposed legislation. IF also distributed brochures to partners and the public advocating for legal reforms to protect women's rights. IF and partner NGOs collected over 28415 signatures and conducted 50 advocacy meetings with members of office to call for a stronger legal framework with greater protection of women issues! 

 


 

IF completed all cascade trainings successfully in five provinces training a total of 337 women candidates! 16 women trained won provincial council seats. These women have expressed gratitude for the training and the preparation and confidence it provided.

 

IF partner NGO in Iraqi-Kurdistan coordinated with the Iraqi Higher Election Commission (IHEC) in April and May to invite candidates in KRG to attend the training. IF conducted outreach through radio, phone calls and direct invitations to the political party candidates. The training in Iraqi-Kurdistan began in May and continued through June of 2013. 285 candidates have been trained in the three provinces of Iraqi-Kurdistan!

 

IF implemented condensed outreach campaigns through radio stations, phone calls and direct invitation to the political parties' candidates in Iraqi-Kurdistan. Invitations have been sent to more than 450 candidates  in the three provinces.   The training began in late May and continued throughout June 2013. A total of 302 candidates have been trained in the three Kurdish provinces distributed as 106 in Sulymania, 103 in Erbil and 75 in Dohuk.
