Human Rights Education Workshop
Basra, Iraq
October 28, 2007
As part of the Human Rights Education Project, the Foundation’s Basra office sponsored a two day workshop in the Southern governorate, which began on October 28, for 20 participants. The workshop focused on general universal principles and standards of human rights, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women, as well as human rights guarantees in the Iraqi constitution and exiting Iraqi legislation. The workshop also discussed ongoing human rights violations in the country and the role of civil society and the government in protecting the rights and freedoms of the people. The workshop included participants from the Basra ministries of health and environment, prison officials at local correction facilities, and representatives of various non-governmental organizations.
