Radio Programs - Cycle 2

As part of the Human Rights Education (HRE) Project, IF began producing and broadcasting a new cycle of eight radio programs in 2007. These productions covered a range of human rights topics, including programs on women's rights, citizenship rights, youth rights, and constitutional amendments that promote freedoms and rights, among other prevalent human rights issues. IF's radio programs aim to reach a larger, more diverse audience across Iraq.
The Foundation added the human rights education radio programs to the HRE workshops programming in October 2006. To date, IF has completed the first cycle of radio programs, producing and broadcasting eight programs on various Iraqi media outlets. The second cycle of broadcasts, which all aired on Radio Al-Iraqyia, were produced in November and September, 2007 and Broadcast in December and January.
The first production covered women issues. Produced on June 11 th 2007, the program hosted lawyer and women rights activist Tameem Al-Azawi. Al-Azawi discussed the Iraqi woman situation and her problems and concerns. The talk also covered the means to improve women’s situation in Iraq. This program aired on November 14, 2007.
The second program, also produced on June 11 th 2007, covered the citizenship issue. The program hosted lawyer and human rights activist, Sadek Al-Tameemi. Al-Tameemi declared that the citizenship issue is rooted in the Iraqi political structure. He discussed the importance of shaping public opinions in order to build real citizenship. This program aired on November 21, 2007.
The third radio program dealt with the Iraqi youth and its relationship with older generations. It was produced on June 27 th 2007, and hosted conflict resolution trainer, Fallah Al-Aloussi. Al-Alousi talked about the programs that should be put in place to engage youth in society building and in national dialogue. This program aired on November 28, 2007.
The fourth radio program, produced on July 1 st 2007, dealt with the question of constitutional amendments in Iraq. The program hosted Bushra Al-Ubaidi, a Criminal Law professor at the Baghdad University Law School and a women rights activist. Al-Ubaidi discussed the Iraqi constitution and the way it is perceived by different stakeholders. The law professor also compared the 1925 and 2005 constitutions and discussed the similarity of the circumstances in which these two constitutions were drafted. The discussion also covered the basic conditions in which a constitution should be drafted, the Kirkouk and oil distribution questions, the Rights and Freedom issue, article 41 of the constitution on personal status, and the federal Supreme Court’s role in overseeing the laws’ constitutionality and interpreting the constitutional texts. This program aired on December 12, 2007.
The fifth radio program, which was produced on September 19, 2007 and broadcast on January 23, featured Sadek Rashid Al-Tammimi, a noted advocate and human rights activist. Al-Tammimi focused the discussion on culture and social tolerance and their roles in promoting national reconciliation. Examining the mosaic of Iraqi society, Al-Tammimi explored the possibility of promoting a culture of plurality in Iraqi politics. The discussion also investigated ways to create strategic mechanisms, which would enable Iraq to build a diverse and thriving democracy on the foundation of a pluralistic and robust middle class.
The sixth radio program, which was produced on September 19, 2007 and broadcast on January 16, 2008, featured Hussein Abdel Amir Sabri, editor in chief. Sabri discussed the role of information in Iraq’s national reconciliation process. Examining laws regulating official and non-official information in Iraq, Sabri went on to discuss the interplay between state and government information, media, and public opinion.
The seventh radio program, which was produced on September 20, 2007 and broadcast on January 9, 2008, addressed civil society organizations. Women’s issues activist Ta’mim el-Azzawi discussed the concept of civil society, the role of non-governmental organizations in Iraqi society as well as the relationship of NGOs to the Iraqi government and the constitution.
The eigth radio program, with was broadcast on January 2, 2007 featured human rights activist Suha Al-Azzawi. AL-Azzawi discussed the human rights issues that face Iraqi children, including how international standards define a child, how to address violence against children, the role of education, and child labor.
