Hilla Workshop

As part of the Iraq Constitution Education Project (ICAP) initiative, the Iraq Foundation in collaboration with the Hilla Human Rights Watch held a constitution education workshop in the Southern city of Hilla on 12/24/2005. Some 65 civil society members and leaders, including Iraqi university professors, journalists, and lawyers debated their viewpoints, suggested amendments, and presented their analysis of Iraq’s constitution. The workshop, which was held under the title of “For the Purpose of Securing Freedoms in a Democratic Iraq”, focused on 1) freedoms and rights in the constitution and 2) constitutional articles 36 and 43.

The workshop aimed at:

1) Raising public awareness on the constitution;
2) Developing, protecting, and fostering the freedoms outlined in article 2;
3) Bringing together civil society members to suggest favorable constitution amendments and discuss ideas; and
4) Enhancing the role of civil society in promoting democracy
