In Mosul, Iraq Must Learn From Past Mistakes

- As the Iraqi government advances their timeline to overtake the Islamic State – controlled  city of Mosul, many question the readiness of not only the Iraqi government, but also the Iraqi people. The Islamic State has trapped an estimated 1.2 million people inside the city of Mosul, in addition to the nearly 800,000 Iraqis living in surrounding areas. Experts estimate the current amount of internally displaced Iraqi people at a staggering 3.5 million citizens. The Iraqi government’s sudden push for the re-capture of Mosul from the Islamic State by the end of the year further complicates the already drastic situation regarding population displacement. IF Mourns the Passing of Zaha Hadid

- The Iraq Foundation mourns the death of Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid. She was an architect of global renown, winning the Pritzker Architecture Prize, among many others, for her bold and convention-shattering designs. The world has lost a brilliant architect, and Iraqis have lost a rare beacon of greatness.  


IF’s Al-Rasid Project Makes Major Advance for Yezidi Women

- The Al-Rasid Approach Since its formation in March 2015, the first priority of the al-Rasid Ninawa Provincial Task Force has been providing support to ease the suffering of minority women who have survived and escaped from imprisonment by ISIL. The Task Force advocated for minority SGBV survivors through meetings with government officials, demonstrations, and protests to urge the government to act and assist SGBV survivors. Furthermore,the suffering of Yezidi women has been at the top of the agenda for the PTF’s efforts in the province. On August 12, 2015, the task force invited the General Director of Yezidi affairs, Mr. Khayri Buzani, along with the Chairman for the Ninawa Provincial Council to their meeting. IF Holds National Task Force Training for Rasid

- Activity 3: Create National Task Force (NTF) and build capacity in necessary skills to draft the final report   On August 17th &18th, IF held the second workshop in the PTF capacity building series which focused on data collection. This workshop was conducted in collaboration with academics and field experts including Dr. Ghaith Al-Janabi and Ms. Siham Abdulhameed –  Head of the Central Statistical Organization in the Ministry of Planning. During this workshop, 38 PTFs analyzed data collected previously on how women in Iraq are  contributing to peace processes and what areas they could move into to further these efforts. Part of the first day was devoted to reviewing the data collected by the NGO researchers, how they collected the data, and how they presented it.
