Youth Civics Camp 2012: Sessions 1-2

IF launched its third “Youth Civics Camp” in partnership with the American University of Iraq in Suleimaniyya (AUI/S) from June 24-28 and July 1-5.

The Civic Camps were held over a two week period, back-to-back.  Two groups of youth participants were trained in each week. Each group included a range between 20 to 29 student participants. The total number of participated youth was 101 (36 female and 65 male). The participants were from university level and from different provinces and colleges.

The training curricula of this year’s camp included: human rights, citizenship, constitutional education, film editing, documentary film production, social networking, and democracy and civic society education. The camp included social activities to build friendships between the participants in the youth camps and the AUI-S students. These activities included a football match between the youth participants and the AUI-S students, and the camp participants attended a play presented by the AUI-S students.  The camps drew the attention of Iraqi officials; Dr. Barham Salih, former Prime Minister of Kurdistan.  The Youth Camps were concluded with a number of suggestions of activities which will be followed up.  These activities aim to benefit different categories of the Iraqi society.  The goal of these activities is to spread the democratic concepts of which youth participants gained an understanding during the camps to the broader society.

The camps included screenings for documentaries that are produced from some participants in the youth camps, who are also members of the documentary production teams of the ongoing Interfaith Cooperation Project (ICP).  These screenings had positive impact on the participants: they became more knowledgeable about Iraq’s society diversity, gained awareness about the rituals and acts of worship and the values of religions in Iraq, and the documentaries changed their views positively.

Al-Furat and Al-Rasheed Satellite Channels covered the camps’ activities in the media.
